SEO:Content Really is King ?

Every few months, someone seems to attack search engine optimization. SEOs are often quick to rise in defense of their profession. I’ve done that plenty myself, in the past. But a barrage of recent cold-call SEO pitches in my inbox even has me hating SEO.

Of course, I don’t really hate SEO. That’s because I know the difference between:

SEO and search engine spam
SEO and snake-oil promises
SEO remains the act of gaining free traffic from search engines, and also to me, gaining that traffic in ways that don’t put you at risk of being banned or penalized by those search engines. It’s a perfectly acceptable activity that even the search engines encourage. That’s why Google itself offers a guide to SEO.

For years now, so-called SEO experts have been preaching a rhetoric of “Content is King” philosophy, backed by little substance, few or no examples, and without reference to analytic reports. Grassroots search engine optimization involved website optimization, which later became the poor stepchild of modern day SEO after years of over-analyzing ranking signals. I believe that content is not king. What is king and will continue to be the primary driver of long term SEO success involves the following:

Content Vs Code
The difference between content and code was first explained to me in 1998 when I was a webmaster with a talent for creating over-sized buttons with 90′s style bevel and emboss features (okay, and possibly some annoying animation too).

Content is anything displayed to the user in their web browser. Code is anything within < tags > not displayed to user. Simple, right?

For the greater part of the 2000 era, we as webmasters (website optimizers) focused on code structure and website-level performance focal points; later injecting our keywords into the framework and earning top placement in MSN (now Bing.com) in a matter of weeks. Once we placed #1, we knew that all that would be required to earn the same position in Google was links, since links were Larry Page’s legacy PageRank scoring system.

Enter “content is king”. Since nobody will link to awful content (at least not naturally or without an incentive), webmasters have become obsessed with forcing business owners to deliver writing and digital media that go beyond the scope of what a typical business owner could possibly create themselves. In fact, the last quinquennium or so we’ve become convinced that it’s this keyword content that’s required to beat Google updates such as May Day, Panda and Penguin.

White Hat, Black Hat & No Hat SEO
 Search engine spam, to me, isn’t SEO. Some who practice it may disagree. “Black Hat SEO” to them remains SEO. Just because they don’t want to follow the rules a search engine puts down doesn’t mean they aren’t doing SEO.
OK, then we have two types of SEO, “white hat” and “black hat.” And it’s black hat SEO alone that cause all the problems, right? Nope. That’s because you’ve also got some supposed “white hats” who don’t violate any rules but also don’t actually provide any SEO value. Let’s call them “no hats.”

The No Hat Pitch
I’m pretty sick of no hat SEOs. That’s because they send me crud like this:

I’m pretty sure spending $50 will do absolutely nothing for me or anyone using this firm. Maybe they’ll somehow place 100 links on the web, and maybe, just maybe, they really will do it without “black hat” methods.

But those links probably won’t really give my site any benefit. What’s the anchor text going to be? If it’s the same for each page, going up all at the same time, might that trigger some unnatural link warning from Google? And even with low cost labor being used, $50 simply doesn’t cover the necessary time to understand what a site is about, to research other sites and then engage in communication to obtain quality links.

Another No Hat Pitch
Here’s another, sent to me and all the Marketing Land editors through our contact form:

The email is crap right from the first sentence, given that the person sending this has no idea what keywords are important to our site.

The itemization of problems isn’t correct, but then again, neither is some of the grammar in the itemization. But some people might believe this, in the way they might believe someone pitching an unnecessary product to remove mold in their home or to prevent a car from developing rust.

If this company really does have a team of certified Google Analytics and Google AdWords people, I’d hope Google would pull those certifications, which mean nothing in terms of guaranteeing SEO results. It’s like saying you have a team of certified carpenters and electricians who are going to try and fix your plumbing problems.

The Terrible Public Faces Of “SEO”
Pitches like these cause some people to hate SEO simply because they’re so so damn annoying. Others end up hating SEO because they’re taken in and waste their money on something they thought was SEO but wasn’t. Either way, it’s not a pretty public face that some associate with SEO.

This leads to what I’ve called crap hat SEO. Crap hat SEO produces the second terrible public face that people see.

Crap Hat SEO
A crap hat SEO doesn’t give a damn about anything. They may be generating hundreds or thousands of pages of nonsensical copy using software, then using more software to comment spam the hell out of sites and pretty much not caring about what type of mess they leave behind, as long as they rank.

And mess it is. Publishers who own those comment spammed sites have to deal with the garbage, and they blame the damn “SEOs” for causing it. You also have some searchers who encounter junk pages that don’t really deliver what they’re looking for eventually realize there’s this “SEO thing” that screwed everything up.

The SEO Reputation Problem
I wish I had an easy solution for these things, but I don’t. What I can say is that SEO is not alone among industries where some bad actors can give the entire profession a terrible reputation.

For example, anyone who’s ever taken out a home loan knows that in the following weeks, you’ll get inundated with “official letters” of all types, stamped “time sensitive” or “important notice” and sounding authoritative by listing your loan balance or lender.

These pitches for insurance policies or refinancing offers are crap, public facing crap that give the insurance and mortgage industries a bad name.

But both industries provide necessary services, and there are good people and companies in those industries. That’s why they continue on, and it’s why SEO continues on despite every few months someone writing an article declaring that it’s going to die.

Intent Content Vs Interest Content
I challenge you to break your content into 2 types: Intent & Interest. Your intent content is fundamental to your on-page SEO strategy. For retailers, these are your category and product detail pages. For lead gen, these pages are the services and/or specialist pages that convert visitors into customers, but also have a main keyword theme (like “SEO Expert”).

NOTE: Your web design company should not be charging you extra for fundamental best practices – there is no extra effort required to apply SEO best practices.

Analyze your competitors’ versions of your pages and make yours more convincing (sit in on a sales call with your best rep), but also make sure you’ve thought about the following website-level elements, which may make all the difference:

Page title and description are unique and use title tag principles, while insuring that they fit in the SERPS without truncation
Using only one h1 tag per page with a main topic/theme in mind
Your code does not need to use valid CSS3 or HTML5, but it does help insure cross-browser and cross-device compatibility and should at least be considered.
Webpages should look great on any browser, but a mobile (tap-friendly) version will be the absolute best experience to Smartphone users (nearly 20% of all searches are done on mobile devices now)
Using a Content Delivery Network (such as MaxCDN) will significantly optimize files and download times.
Performance matters. If it didn’t, why would Google create PageSpeed tools? WebpageTest.org uses this tool to give you an quick way to test your webpages.
Your pages should be structured like a college essay, with a strong title, short heading, main thesis/first paragraph, sub-topics (subheadings), examples, bullet/numbered lists, images and video (as applicable) along with links to additional resources, references, and similar content the reader might be interested in.
Check for broken links and images, along with alt and height/width attributes for accessibility & performance improvement.
Verify that your content is unique by copying a line of text from the page and pasting it into Google within quotes.
Include a site map for users (rich in keywords that define the content) and a site map for search engines (XML)
I could go on forever, but nowhere above do you see anything that requires a cost on your end, just your time or the time of an intern (or bored receptionist). Intent keywords aren’t difficult to rank for within most search engines if your site scores well with all the tools mentioned above.

As a search marketer your first thought will definitely 'how can I make sure my work by taking advantage of this change? "The answer to that question begins with an understanding of some Google currently holds patents that can help do this.

Topical PageRank

We have a busy time back in 2003, bringing Taher H. Haveliwala, the genius behind the PHD students new ways to apply the topical relevance of PageRank to model the faltering company.

His research is about applying greater relevance for links from topical pages as assessed by a new technology they acquired Applied Semantics CIRCA 'means that they can begin to develop a way to measure relevance.

Reasonable Surfer Model

This was later taken another step further by applying different weights to different links on the same page based on their 'corresponded to click'. The more likely they will be 'used' more authority given to them. Everything from the font size for the position and even the colors were taken into account in this calculation.

Phrase Based Indexing

To further complicate the picture I then also look at the co-occurrence of words and phrases on the page to work out the 'meaning' them. If you take the 'dog hair' sentence, for example, I needed a way to understand its meaning.

To do that he would see another page stating that the same sentence to see what else they mentioned. If they mention things like 'drink' and 'morning after the night before', for example, will understand that, and the page linking to speak of beverages to offset the effects of a heavy night it will assign more authority to the link as it was very relevant.

Is it talking about the dog hair will be less relevant and therefore less valuable link.

This is a key development because most likely responsible for much of the punishment we're looking at as a result of the practice of link building spam. To stop the Google page rank can only delete the relationship between pages and any specific terms in the index.

It also threw some exciting opportunities and new ways of working for those who are looking for ways to optimize your website, and we'll come to that a little later.

Metaweb acquisition

While the algorithm is not patent or purchase directly from the Google algo change Metaweb, an open source database entities people, places, things, supported the development of 'Graph Knowledge' and fast-tracked moves to add more variety and 'user intent understanding' for search results.

Knowing all of the above are not handy with some of the 'next step' follow-up in terms of how it affects the search for your own marketing.

So let's look at some ways in which this kind of knowledge has helped me structure ourselves on and off the page at Zazzle.

Mapping Relevance

The first thing you have to work at the time of consideration of your page attack plan to proactively raise the profile of its own relevance is to understand what is considered 'relevant' to you, and how, in the world of semantics. Below are examples of words that are associated with 'content marketing' and how they are connected:

The good news is that there is no need to use a guess here. Tools exist to take the hard work out of the process and some of the best are listed below:

http://ctrl-search.com/blog/ - this is a great tool to enrich the content on your page. Effective semantic optimize your own site. By inserting the pieces of your posts engines find semantically related images and other content for you to link to and add.

http://lsikeywords.com/ - some great blog posts that have been created recently about the subject LSI, or Latent Semantic Indexing, including this one on the blog linked to our own.

We write about it, because it is an important part of our own outreach process now. For each part of the work we do we will use a tool like this to make sure we stay relevant.

LSI keywords are one of the few tools that will display a list of keywords and phrases that are semantically relevant for you to expand your range of approaches.

http://bottlenose.com/ - are the tools I've mentioned before here and are great for many things, especially large data led contents cu ration. One company tools' however great relevance to understand the degree of separation. After you type the keyword you have the option to browse through a number of different tools but the one we want to use for this is the Sonar +. This real-time visual mapping semantic relations between concepts by sharing Twittersphere and other large data.

Google Semantic Operator - not a tool per se, but the service is very useful to help determine the keyword semantic relationship. By adding the symbol ~ Tilde when searching Google for your keywords (for example: ~ trip) you will see other words that Google has mapped the word, such as Hotels, Flights, Hotels, Tours.

http://ubersuggest.org/ although not officially a ubersuggest semantic tools built on the Google search engine and the prediction that by default gives the relevant semantic search, which makes it great for keyword list building outreach.

All the above tools give users the ability to create keyword-based maps where if the link is to reach your project goals.

Build Outreach Plan

Once you have a view of where you want to reach too so the next step is to develop a plan to do that.

The next stage is to create a project plan based on the time to detail every step of the process. It is very important when doing outreach, because it can be very easy to get distracted and pulled to the side and out of the zone you defined the relevant semantics.

We use a simple Excel table for this plan and below you can see an example based on a two week outreach campaign for fitness brand.

As you can see we had planned a day of time in certain areas to ensure we cover as much as possible the semantics of relevant opportunities. Into this plan we will then add contacts outreach and see what we have communication with each.

How outreach has also been discussed in detail by posting like this, this and this and this post is already too long to investigate this now but one tip to follow is to be as complete as possible in exploring every way. Think of Face to Face, Phone, Twitter and email finally in terms of contact hierarchies media as further you go down the list to the placement of the lower conversion will.

Where things are very interesting in a semantically driven project, certainly in terms of the activity of the page, is when you start to consider what the real value of the work; metrics will monitor the KPI to the campaign.

Posting links without

Posting content without the need to get a link may seem like a crazy proposition, especially if you measure success by ranking and search engine visibility metrics, but it might not happen.

Real marketing is not about the link. It's about connecting your brand or business to people with similar interests and beliefs. Link is just a mechanism that encourages visibility Google to get you in front of more of the people more often.

We understand that while the entire business built on that link really needs to get away from that model and motivate us to act as above-the-line marketers. And that is where the co-occurrence of lexical entry

In simple terms, but it is a way of ranking websites and pages instead of the inbound links but by how many times they mentioned near the key phrase.

That game changed.

If Google can work out what is relevant to the anchor text is not by looking stupid, but what people write about you and what other phrases you regularly appear close to changing the way you market your content and outreach.

Imagine being able to fill an awesome outreach without having to find the link. Enough to make people aware of what you are doing and get them talking about you. This is how it should be and it will have a profound effect on the type of content that can be produced and brand-marketing activities you may pursue. Expect PR stunts galore!

On Page Optimisation Semantic

Another key element 'link building' semantics is to build your relevancy to expand the scope of what you are 'about'. If Google is looking to diversify the results of the many words and phrases that you can associate yourself with either.

This means expanding your repertoire. Write more about peripheral semantic phrases that are still on the brand, but it can help you rank for more relevant searches.

In many ways this is no different to how any good content strategy must be built anyway but below is a simple reminder and additional points to consider when designing content for semantic engine:

Proximity> keyword mentions, as we know it is useful to help keyword-based search engines such as Google work out what you are about. To fix this add up sentences with synonyms, as this is a strong signal that you are semantically relevant to a group of phrases. Try and then align URL, H1, bold and italic text, etc. to ensure continuity, as always to strengthen the page. How close is the keyword for the key modifiers, and other links, and rise higher in their code is good.
Herpes zoster is relevant and Co-Gen Keywords> use those tools and make sure you add those phrases co-occur in the copy of the page.
Synonyms linking keywords> Make sure your links from relevant semantic keywords back to the landing page for terms greater key to creating a strong semantic theme. So connect internally using 'holiday', 'hotel' and other terms back to the landing page 'on the way' key.
Linking out> again this is not new but by choosing the 'Authority' or 'experts' in the niche document, as described by Hilltop algorithm. This means looking for high authority sites are ranking for the term you want to be relevant to.
Takeaways

We have covered a lot of ground in a long piece. My hope is that it provides a solid overview of where Google and the major search engines, is heading. More important is to provide some actionable tips and suggestions for you to start applying now to ensure your site benefit from the upcoming changes.

Now, let's get down to the nitty gritty. First, how to quickly and effectively find the link to endanger do I ...?

1. Finding low-value link

The quickest way to do this is via the tab 'Analysis' in the Link Builder (If you do not have the tools yet, register for a free trial of Builder link here)

Began a campaign for the domain you want to analyze backlinks for. (I'll use Wordtracker.com). Soon after it was built, hit the Analysis tab and it displays all the links that point to your domain:

You'll want to focus on the link that may be of low value and harm you, and we have made it easy for you by presenting major metric called Trust Flow

The column on the far right of the Trust for the current show pages that link has come from. This means you can quickly see, strong, or weak pages linking to you. (The higher the current Trust, the better).

Click column headers to sort by current Url Links Trust in order. Now you can see all the pages that link to you who have little or no value. At this point it is a good idea to extend the table using the dropdown on the left to show 50 rows:

2. Identifying the poor

So now you know where to find a link is potentially dangerous. The next step is to make a list of these are definitely dangerous. This is a site whose content I find nothing unique to say or benefits to give to others. So the best place to start is to look at a site that does not have to deliver value and therefore will be more likely to have a negative effect.

The golden rule is, if the primary purpose of the site are links to other sites, Google will take the view that it is poor and is likely to be spam.

Let's look for some kind of target sites. When you find a link, noting that the link comes from the domain. If you are not too sure if the site is a bad thing to have a link from, to visit him. If the domain seems to have some benefits not put it on the list. We will discuss what to do with the list you have built up in the next step.
Scraper sites

"Content is King" is a motto that is used for large-scale use in SEO. There was a point when having a larger site, no matter what it consists of is seen as beneficial. Of scraper site thinks birth, crawling through web content and copy the link contained in it and put it in its own domain.

Blog Network

It did not take long to cotton to Google webmaster, who updated their algorithm to give value only to unique content, so the combat kind of scraper sites. However, a more ingenious version of the site scraper immediately take their place: the people who take the content and rewrite it.

We have derived the blog network manually and try to detect them through the algorithm. You can be sure that the masses of low-quality content at low authority site is one thing that roots out and that's what you need to look out for in order to identify them in your backlink. These sites are submission services that you, or SEO provider will be required to have signed up and paid.

You will also find that this will uncover many article directory sites as well. It may have taken delivery of your content from the service automatically or by scraping it from somewhere else.
Adult sites

Adult sites are usually part of the so-called 'bad neighborhood'. This is a site with a link from another adult and a low value sites, which generally connect to each other and form a network, or 'neighborhood'. Getting a link from it to show the search engines that your site may also be part of the 'environment'.

3. Let Google and Bing know which links are not like

Before you go any further, however, take a step back and think. If you are sure you know what you're doing, go ahead. If you are still not sure what the effect of this process might be and how it works then again, read about Google and Bing denying tools and do more research on Wordtracker Academy

Bing is the simplest of the two so let's deal with that first.

Go to Bing Webmaster Tools and find the 'Configure My Site' option, then click 'Link to deny':

Select the 'Domain' from the dropdown menu, then enter the first URL from your list. Click the 'deny':

Now you can build a list of sites that you do not want to link from. If you add one to the list, then had second thoughts, you can easily remove them.

Tips SEO for 2013

 I was going to write a long list of suggestions, but I realized that they almost all boiled down to just one idea. I’m not going to toy with you – my top tip for 2013 SEO is this:

SEO on 2013 is really depending on your website or landing page PR. According to the Google panda update
Google Algorithm Change History | SEOmoz and my experience. PR1, PR0, and new domain website cannot submit many back links to Article directory, Blogs, Business directory, and profiles. Because the website is new, there is no way got many back links. No matter each day 5, or 1. That will be soon to be put into sand box by google. Forget about the Unique Article Wizard, Social Monkee, Article ranks. This kind of service will hurt your keyword ranking if your website is new. If your website PR is 4 above, that will be no problems to use these kind of service. PR3 below will be punished by google.Somebody asked the Social Monkee will hurt the website SERP or not. The answers are quite different. Some got hurt, but some don't. The reason is the website PR.

Diversify Anchor Text

It’s not natural, and you know it. What’s the best way to make your anchor text seem “natural?” Stop obsessing over it. Yes, anchor text is a signal, but any solid link profile is going to naturally use relevant text and appear in the context of relevant text. If you want to tweak the text on some of your high-authority links, go for it, but I wouldn’t break out the spreadsheets in 2013.

Diversify Your Links

Are guest posts the one true answer to all of life’s questions or are they a scourge on our fragile earth? To read the SEO blogosphere in 2012, it’s hard to tell. Any link-building tactic can be low quality, if you abuse it. The problem is that someone reads a tip about how guest posts make good links and then they run off and publish the same slapped-together junk on 15,000 sites. Then they wonder why their rankings dropped.

Diversify Traffic Sources

There’s an 800-lb. Gorilla in the room, and we’re all writing more SEO blog posts to avoid talking about it. Most of us are far too dependent on Google for traffic. What would you do if something changed overnight? I know some of you will object  – “But ALL my tactics are white-hat and I follow the rules!” Assuming that you understood the rules 100% accurately and really followed them to the letter, what if they changed?

The more I follow the Algorithm, the more I realize that the changing search UI and feature landscape may be even more important than the core algorithm itself. What happens if your competitor suddenly gets site-links, or you’re #8 on a SERP that drops to only 7 results, or everyone gets video snippets and you have no videos, or your niche shifts to paid inclusion and you can’t afford to pay? Even if you’ve followed the rules, your traffic could drop on a moment’s notice.

Diversify Your Marketing

Stop taking shortcuts and make a real resolution in 2013 to think hard about what you do and why it has value. If you understand your value proposition, content and marketing naturally flow out of that. Talk to people outside of the SEO and marketing teams. Find out what your company does that’s unique, exciting, and resonates with customers.

Diversify Your Point Of View

In 2013, if you tell me your industry is "boring," be warned - I'm going to smack you. If you're bored by what you do, how do you think your prospects and customers will feel? Step out - have someone give you a tour of your office like you've never been there. Visit your home city like you're a tourist coming there for the first time. 1 Focus on your location of search engine. Google.com is the highest competitive search engine, and so easy to be punished. I highly suggest focus on local search like google.co.uk, google.com.au and so on.

2 Submit 2 articles to EZine in the first 3 months. Don't submit too much. No use for ranking

3 Submit 1 PRweb press release, if you get enough budget. If you don't have, try free press release, Don't submit too many free press release also.

4 Focus on the new site back links Authority not back links numbers. 5 or 6 high authority backlinks for each url is quite enough.

5 Don't use the Wordpress Robot to auto generate the website contents, please write some unique 500 words contents for each landing page of the website. The whole website must have at least 16 pages. Don't even think one page will stick on the google.com first page. One page website using adsense to earn money will be punished. The one page contents website will be in the sandbox after 2 or 3 months.

6 Submit your website to google maps, and link your website to social media like facebook, twitter, and google plus. The more followers in this social media, the better.

7 Don't use the SENuke to whatever link building, no matter 1 layer, 2 layers, link wheel, if the site PR is PR3 blow. Because Google not stupid to recognize these bulk spam links.

  3. Conversion – how will your website convert prospects into customers or drive additional sales from current customers? Be sure to have conversions defined for your site – and for better measurement, incorporate Google Analytics conversion tracking.
  4. Keywords – Search engines will index your site better if they can understand what your site and pages are about. Get some professional assistance in finding the keywords for your industry and utilize keywords effectively within your site.
  5. Speed – Make sure your site is fast. Don’t pick the lowest cost host, they’re just going to put your site on a shared, crappy server that will hurt both your search engine optimization and your visitors’ patience. 
  6. www – Decide whether or not you’d like your domain to start with www or not. Be sure to redirect traffic to the one you select with a 301 (permanent) redirect. 
  7. Webmasters – be sure to register your domain with Google Webmasters Tools and identify whether or not you have any issues with your site.
  8. Alerts – Maile also recommends signing up for Webmaster Alerts so that you’re notified whenever there’s an issue with your site.
  9. Domain – it’s recommended that you do a background check of your domain to ensure the site was never in trouble prior to you selecting it. Spam, malware, indecent content… any of those issues could hurt your chances of getting ranked. If there are problems, you can notify Google via Webmasters that the domain is now managed by a new owner.
  10. Fetch – within Webmasters, fetch your pages to ensure that the search engines aren’t going to run into difficulties crawling your site.
  11. Submit – if there’s no problem, submit the page to Google. If you build your site with a great content management system, the CMS will do this for you each time you publish new or updated content.
